Volcanoes, natural parks, delicious food, and breathtaking beaches… You’ve got all for your weekend away in Lanzarote

If you’re living the experience of being a Language Assistant and have long weekends to spare, you’re probably wondering where to go to make the most of your time in Spain. While it may not seem obvious, a quick getaway to one of the islands could be the perfect option for a memorable three-day escape. In this post, we’ll explore all the amazing things you can do on a weekend away in Lanzarote.

The classic go-to: Papas arrugadas con mojo

Have you ever heard of papas arrugadas before? Papas arrugadas is a traditional Canarian dish made with small potatoes, boiled in their skins in salty water. This cooking method causes the skin to wrinkle, which is how they got their name. Once cooked, they’re typically served with two types of mojo, a local sauce: mojo verde (made with cilantro) or mojo rojo (made with peppers, garlic, and other spices). It’s a simple but delicious dish. You’ll find great papas arrugadas almost anywhere in Lanzarote!

The can’t-miss spot: Los Jameos del Agua

Los Jameos del Agua is a unique natural and cultural space in Lanzarote. It is located within a volcanic tunnel formed by the eruption of the Volcán de la Corona. It was transformed by the artist César Manrique into a center for art, nature, and culture, integrating the volcanic environment with architectural elements. Inside, it features a crystal-clear underground lagoon, creating a magical and peaceful atmosphere. Additionally, the site includes a natural auditorium, a restaurant, and a setting that highlights the beauty of the island’s volcanic geology.

You can visit Los Jameos del Agua either on your own or as part of a group tour during your weekend away in Lanzarote.

The walker’s dream: Parque Nacional del Timanfaya

El Parque Nacional del Timanfaya is in the heart of Lanzarote, characterized by its volcanic landscape of extreme and unique nature. The park was formed by a series of volcanic eruptions, resulting in land covered by layers of solidified lava and remnants of geothermal activity. The ground is notably warm, and you can observe geothermal phenomena such as heat being released from the underground, demonstrated through scientific displays in the park. The geological formations include mountains of hardened lava and vast desert-like plains, with an arid, almost lunar atmosphere.

The foodie haven: Mirador de los Valles

Restaurante Mirador de los Valles is in the heart of Lanzarote, offering stunning panoramic views of the island’s valleys and volcanic landscapes. It is located in Los Valles de Lanzarote and it’s a perfect spot to enjoy a meal while taking in the island’s unique scenery. The restaurant serves traditional Canarian cuisine, featuring local products, including fresh fish, meats, and papas arrugadas with mojo. The combination of delicious food and spectacular views makes Mirador de los Valles a popular destination for visitors who want to enjoy the true taste of Lanzarote in a peaceful, scenic setting.
