Here are our recommendations for your weekend away in San Sebastián
San Sebastián (and it’s not just me saying this, but a lot of rankings agree) is one of the most beautiful cities on the Península. Its architecture, the sea, the views, the gastronomy… everything is simply spectacular. If you’re thinking about visiting a city for the weekend, whether it’s for a couple of days or a long weekend, this city will not disappoint you. Grab a pen and paper (or the notes app on your phone!): here’s our mini-guide for your weekend away in San Sebastián!

The classic go-to: Tarta de queso (Bar La Viña)
This very traditional bar, located in the old town of San Sebastián, right in the heart of the area full of bars, tapas, and great atmosphere, is known for its tarta de queso (cheesecake). Both tourists and locals are familiar with this dessert, as it has become famous for its smoothness and flavor. If you like desserts and have decided to enjoy a weekend away in San Sebastián, you can’t miss this.
Besides the tarta de queso, Bar Néstor offers delicious tapas that you should try on your ruta de pintxos.
The can’t miss-spot: Monte Igueldo
El Monte Igueldo is one of the most iconic spots in San Sebastián, known for its breathtaking panoramic of the city and the coast. Located to the west of the city, it offers one of the best views of the city, including La Playa de la Concha, the port and Monte Urgull.
If you’re spending a weekend away in San Sebastián, you’ve got to check this out! The best way to get to the top is by riding the historic funicular, which has been running since 1912— it’s actually the oldest in the city. It’s a peaceful ride that takes you up through beautiful scenery.
The walker’s dream: El Paseo de la Concha
I’m sure you’re going to love El Paseo de la Concha; it’s absolutely stunning! This promenade is always filled with people, whether they’re enjoying the beautiful seascape, grabbing an ice cream from one of the many famous shops, or taking their kids to the Ferris wheel. It’s truly one of San Sebastián’s most beloved gems, and it’s definitely a spot you’ll want to add to your travel itinerary! You’ll see people walking their dogs, friends hanging out on benches just chatting, and kids running around like they’ve had three too many scoops of helado— it’s a beautiful sight! The atmosphere is so relaxed that it’s the perfect spot for a leisurely afternoon stroll or some people-watching. And when the sun starts to set, the whole place just glows. It’s the kind of place you find yourself returning to, even when you haven’t planned it.
The foodie haven: Tortilla de patata (Bar Néstor)
Bar Néstor is famous not only in San Sebastián, but across the whole country. If you are a tortilla de patata fan, please save the location of Bar Néstor on your cell phone and, most importantly, keep an eye on their schedule! This bar only makes two tortillas every day: one at 1 p.m. and the other one at 8 p.m., and once the last pintxo is served, that’s it—they don’t make any more. So be ready and get there early, because you can’t leave your weekend away in San Sebastián without trying this absolute wonder. And well, if there are no pintxos left, you can always try their chuletón (t-bone steak), it’s simply mouth-watering.
Until next time, San Sebastián!
And just like that, your weekend away in San Sebastián comes to a close —daily step goal: crushed; belly: full, and maybe a mild obsession with its pintxos. Don’t be surprised if you are already plotting your return before you’re even in the car on your way back home. See you, and don’t forget to check out our other monthly mini-guides!
