A weekend away in Pamplona: what you shouldn’t miss

If you’re planning to escape this weekend to the capital of Navarra, this article is for you. This city offers many beautiful spots to visit. From bars and tapas to enjoy, to tiny and charming stores. Not to forget its breathtaking surroundings like La selva de Irati. There’s so much to see that you would need more than a weekend, so we’ve picked four essentials that you can’t miss on your weekend away in Pamplona. We have divided them into four blocks: The classic go-to, The can’t miss spot, The walker’s dream and The foodie haven. Ready?

The classic go-to: Pastas Beatriz

If you love chocolate, think no more. Garroticos Beatriz is a traditional shop located in the city center, very close to la Catedral, that offers a wide variety of pastries. It is very popular among locals, but also, for tourists and visitors. Their garroticos, made of puff pastry and chocolate, have gained great popularity for being so delicious and unique. You will always find a long queue down the street waiting to savor their products, but hey, we’ll share a secret with you: if you place an order by phone, you can skip the line!

The can’t miss spot: Navarrería and la Catedral

Climbing up the same street that leads to Pastas Beatriz, Calle Curia, you will end up at the Pamplona Cathedral. La Catedral de Santa María la Real is a stunning example of Gothic architecture. Its construction began in the 14th century and was completed in the 17th century, combining Gothic and Renaissance elements. You should definitely visit this historic spot.

Besides, Navarrería is an area very close to the cathedral where young people often gather. It’s full of bars serving traditional tapas and drinks.

The walker’s dream: La Ciudadela

La Ciudadela de Pamplona is a well-preserved historical fortress located in the heart of the city. This ancient citadel was designed in the late 16th century as a defensive military structure and was meant to protect the city from external threats. Surrounded by green areas and trees, it’s a very popular park in which people usually walk around and relax. Its interior is used as a cultural space where you can often find exhibitions, art events, and even concerts. If you’re planning a weekend away in Pamplona, you should definitely have a chill walk around La Ciudadela.

The foodie haven: Bar Gaucho

El Bar Gaucho is one of the most popular bars in Pamplona. It is located in a street overflowing with bars and restaurants, almost by La Plaza del Castillo or La calle Estafeta.

Among them, the most notable are the foi tapa, the truffled egg tapa or the octopus with potatoes tapa!
