The dream of many: here are our recommendations for your weekend away in Madrid

The classic go-to: El Rastro

If you want to make the most of your weekend away in Madrid, you should definitely add El Rastro to your list. El Rastro de Madrid is the city’s most famous open-air market and one of the largest and oldest in Spain. It takes place every Sunday and on public holidays in La Latina neighborhood, filling its streets with stalls where you can find everything—from clothing and antiques to vinyl records, books, furniture, crafts, and much more.

The can’t miss spot: Jardines del Capricho

Los Jardines del Capricho is one of the most beautiful and special parks in Madrid, though not as well-known as El Retiro. Located in the Alameda de Osuna neighborhood, they were created in the 18th century by La Duquesa de Osuna, who wanted a space filled with art, nature, and tranquility.

This garden is unique because it blends three different styles: the French garden, with geometric designs; the English garden, more natural and free-flowing; and the Italian garden, featuring elegant sculptures and fountains. Inside the park, you’ll find some beautiful spots, like a hedge maze, a pond with swans, a classical-style temple, a rustic house, and even a Spanish Civil War bunker, which can be visited on certain tours.

Keep in mind that it’s only open on Sundays and holidays, so it’s perfect for your weekend away in Madrid.

The walker’s dream: El Parque del Retiro

El Parque del Retiro would definitely be on the list of must-visit places. With over 125 hectares, this park offers a haven of peace amidst the crazy city life. If we had to select four spots, this would be our selection:

El Palacio de Cristal
  1. El Estanque Grande: This beautiful lake in the center of the park offers the possibility to rent a boat and enjoy a peaceful time while you take in the views of the park. It’s perfect if you want to take a break from your long walks around the capital while doing something different.
  2. El Palacio de Cristal: This palace is made of glass and metal and is commonly used for art exhibitions; the light there is simply stunning.
  3. La rosaleda: A garden full of roses of various kinds, especially beautiful in spring. If you love flowers, you shouldn’t miss this spot.
  4. El Paseo de las Estatuas: The Paseo de las Estatuas is a beautiful spot within the Retiro, where you can walk among several statues of Spanish kings and historical figures. Along the path, there are 16 statues on columns representing different monarchs. It’s a peaceful place, surrounded by trees, perfect for strolling and enjoying both the art and the natural surroundings.

The foodie haven: Cocido Madrileño

The cocido madrileño is one of those super traditional dishes from Madrid that you can’t miss. It’s a hearty and flavorful stew, perfect for cold days.

It’s made with chickpeas, meat (usually pork and beef), and vegetables like carrots, potatoes, cabbage, and leek. Everything is cooked together in a broth that becomes rich and delicious. The typical way to serve it is in three parts:

  1. The broth: First, they bring you the soup, sometimes with noodles.
  2. The chickpeas and vegetables: Then come the chickpeas with the veggies.
  3. The meat: Finally, the meat, like brisket, chorizo, bacon, and chicken.

It’s a super tasty and filling dish, perfect for sharing with family or friends. In fact, more and more young people are gathering to have cocido on the weekends. If you want to try a good cocido, you should give Casa Lucio a go.
