Let’s take a look at the highlights!
Guess what… October in Spain is just stunning! Yes, I know I’ve kept repeating myself for the last months, but I can’t help it: it’s simply true. We’ll see how I manage when it’s my turn to talk about the winter months!
Anyway, back to October. Autumn is in full bloom, evenings are crisp, and beaches and lakes are quiet but still beautiful. A layer of golden, crunchy leaves covers everything, and the mountains and countryside (which may have gone unnoticed during the summer in contrast to the beaches) are once again in the spotlight. So, it’s the perfect time for exploring and walking around!
But the most important thing about October in Spain is that you guys are coming and starting your experience as Language Assistants. I couldn’t be more excited for you!
To celebrate this beautiful month, I’ll be highlighting what’s happening in Spain, but first, I’ve selected three spots that are perfect for autumn. Let’s go!
3 perfect spots for October in Spain
Sanlúcar de Guadiana (Huelva, Andalucía)

We’re off to a strong start! The community of Andalucía is full of beautiful spots: La Alhambra de Granada, La Catedral de Sevilla, La Mezquita de Córdoba, any beach in Cádiz… Even if you decided blindly where to go, you’d definitely get it right. However, to be a little less obvious, I’ve chosen a smaller town this time.
In the province of Huelva, you’ll find Sanlúcar de Guadiana, which borders Portugal. Not only is it beautiful, but there, you’ll find the world’s first cross-border zip line, which crosses the Guadiana river from Spain to Portugal. The fun part is that you ‘fly through time’, since due to the time zone change, technically you gain an hour. Also, the views are spectacular, and you can return by boat! Tickets cost about 25€ per person, and you can buy them here.
I did this a few years ago with my family and definitely recommend it! Also, in October, the temperatures aren’t as warm, so it’s just the nicest month to visit.
Parque Nacional de Ordesa y Monte Perdido (Huesca, Aragón)
The Parque Nacional de Ordesa y Monte Perdido is a true natural treasure in the Pirineos de Aragón, and trust me, October can be one of the best months to visit it. It’s recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and covers about 15,600 hectares in the province of Huesca, within the region of Sobrarbe. There you’ll find Monte Perdido, the highest limestone mountain in Europe, standing at 3,348 meters tall.
The park is divided into four main valleys: Valle de Ordesa, Valle de Añisclo, Valle de Escuaín, and Valle de Pineta. The most well-known, thanks to its spectacular scenery, is the Valle de Ordesa. The most popular route goes from the Pradera de Ordesa to Cola de Caballo, with a total distance of approximately 18 km. You won’t regret the views!

San Juan de Gaztelugatxe (Bizkaia, País Vasco)

If you’re a Game of Thrones fan, visiting San Juan de Gaztelugatxe is a must. It’s this tiny island off the Bizkaia coast that was used as Dragonstone in the show. You’ll climb a twisty stone staircase with over 200 steps up to a cute little hermitage at the top. The views along the way are absolutely incredible! During certain times of the year, it’s mandatory to reserve a free entry ticket online to visit San Juan de Gaztelugatxe. This system helps manage visitor numbers and protect the site. Outside these periods, access is free and doesn’t require a reservation! Find out more here.
Now, off to October’s highlights: What is happening during this month?

- Fiestas del Pilar (Zaragoza, October 4-13): Every October, Zaragoza comes alive with the Fiestas del Pilar, celebrating the Virgen del Pilar.
