Here’s our monthly mini-guide. Enjoy your weekend away in Oviedo!

While it’s really hot in most parts of Spain right now, the north is a bit cooler, especially at night. This is why, this month, I’ve decided to cover Oviedo (Asturias) for our monthly recs. Not only is it a beautiful city, but you can also explore it in a couple of days, and with the excuse, you could extend your trip and discover other magical spots nearby. I’m thinking of maybe Gijón, for which we also have a mini guide, Llanes or Cangas de Onís.

So, without further ado, here’s the monthly mini guide for your weekend away in Oviedo!

The classic go-to: Sidra

If you go to Oviedo, you’ve got to try the sidra. It’s the region’s signature drink, made from apples. It tastes slightly sour, refreshing and natural. But the best part about sidra is how it is poured. In Spain, we don’t ‘serve’ the sidra. We use the word escanciar, which means that you pour it from a height. Be careful with it: it is easy to drink, and it’ll hit you before you know it…

The can’t-miss spot: Catedral de San Salvador

La Catedral de San Salvador in Oviedo is right in the heart of the old town, and its Gothic tower is easy to spot among the city streets. Inside, it features a mix of architectural styles that reflect its long history, from pre-Romanesque to Baroque. One of its most well-known areas is the Cámara Santa, which holds important relics, especially meaningful to the peregrinos on the Camino de Santiago. It’s a place of full of history, art, and meaning, and a key part of Asturias’ heritage! You must visit it!

The walker’s dream: Campo de San Francisco

El Campo de San Francisco is a popular green space and a spot local people are fond of. It’s right next to the city center, making it perfect for a walk, a break, or just sitting under the trees for a while. The park has leafy paths, little ponds with ducks, and even a statue of Mafalda that’s become something of a local favorite. It’s great to find a bit of calm in the middle of the city.

The foodie haven: Fabada (Cocina Cabal)

Let’s start off explaining what the fabada is, in case you’ve never heard of it. Fabada is a traditional Asturian stew made with large white beans (fabes), chorizo, morcilla, and panceta. It’s usually eaten as a filling meal on cold days, and it’s very popular among the asturianos.

We have picked Cocina Cabal in Oviedo because they won the Mejor Fabada del Mundo contest in 2022, beating 25 other competitors in a final held in Villaviciosa, so it’s a must-try for your weekend away in Oviedo.
