Here’s everything you need to know if you’re spending a weekend away in León

León is a city that combines history, culture, and nature in a very special way. Its streets tell centuries of stories, with buildings that blend the old with the modern. Surrounding the city are green, mountainous landscapes. Food is another part of why I’ve chosen this city. On top of that, León has an amazing cultural life, with museums, festivals, and traditions that make every visit feel authentic and welcoming. León is the perfect candidate for our monthly mini-guide this February!

The classic go-to: Cecina with a glass of wine

Cecina is one of the most typical and flavorful products of León. It’s made from cured and lightly smoked beef, which gives it that intense, slightly salty taste that hooks you from the first bite. It’s usually served in thin slices as a tapa or appetizer and goes perfectly with bread, cheese, or a good local wine, like Mencía or Prieto Picudo. With its Protected Designation of Origin, cecina not only reflects León’s culinary tradition, but it’s also something you absolutely have to try to taste the region’s gastronomy!

Be sure to try the cecina at Ezequiel Calle Ancha.

The foodie haven: Taberna Gaucho

Taberna Gaucho is right in the heart of León’s Barrio Húmedo, on Calle Azabachería, and it’s a classic spot for tapas for locals, and therefore, perfect to try if you’re spending a weekend away in León. The bar is always full of people enjoying traditional bites like potatoes with morcilla. It’s an unpretentious place, perfect for tasting good local food with a glass of wine or a beer, and experiencing the typical tapas culture of León, although it can get quite busy at peak times.

The can’t miss spot: Catedral de León

The Cathedral of León, also known as Pulchra Leonina is one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture in Spain. What stands out the most are its huge stained-glass windows, which fill the interior with light and give it an almost magical feel. Plus, being right in the historic center, it’s a must-visit for anyone wanting to truly experience the essence of León.

The walker’s dream: Parque de Quevedo

The Parque de Quevedo in León is a large and peaceful green space in the El Crucero neighborhood. It’s perfect for taking a walk and relaxing within the city. It was originally a nursery run by the Ministry of Public Works and was converted into a municipal park in the 1980s. The park stands out for its landscaped areas, ponds, and the wildlife that inhabits it, such as peacocks, ducks, and squirrels. It also holds the Green Flag Award, a recognition of its excellent management, cleanliness, and safety, making it an ideal spot to enjoy nature without leaving León. On your to-do list for a weekend away in León, be sure to include a visit to Parque de Quevedo. Nature, beauty and wildlife right in the heart of the city!
