5 Amazing bike rides in Spain

What a coincidence that Spain has so many amazing bike rides to enjoy… just in time for World Bicycle Day! Cycling through Spain feels like you’re discovering a whole new world—from lush green forests to sunny coastal paths, there’s something for everyone. It doesn’t matter if you’re an experienced cyclist or just looking for a simple ride, Spain has a bike route for you. So, let’s get pedaling and check out five awesome bike routes that will make you fall in love with cycling in Spain.

Vía Verde de la Sierra (Andalucía)

Difficulty: Easy
Distance: 38 km
Area: Cádiz and Sevilla

First up is the Vía Verde de la Sierra, one of the most beautiful and easy-going bike rides in Spain. This route runs through the provinces of Cádiz and Sevilla, but it specifically connects the towns of Puerto Serrano (Cádiz) to Olvera (Cádiz) and spans into the Sierra de Cádiz mountain range. The ride is mostly flat, which makes it ideal for beginners or those looking for a relaxed ride.

The route passes through stunning forests, viaducts, and tunnels, contributing to the feeling of cycling through a scenic, almost cinematic landscape. Perfect for a relaxed, scenic ride!

La Senda del Oso (Asturias)

Difficulty: Easy
Distance: 18 km
Area: Teverga

Next, we head to La Senda del Oso, or The Bear Trail, in Asturias. Yes, you read that right: The Bear Trail! This path is a must-do for nature lovers, taking you through lush forests, alongside beautiful rivers, and past old mining tunnels. The 18 km trail is perfect for beginners or families, though if you’re feeling adventurous, you can extend the route to around 22 km.

The real charm of this route lies in the region’s tranquility. The mostly flat path makes it ideal for cyclists of all levels. Don’t be surprised if you spot a bear (or at least a statue of one!), as the trail is located in a bear habitat. While spotting a bear in the wild is rare, there are plenty of educational signs and statues to maintain the bear theme.

Oh, and did I mention the views? The green hills and forests will have you stopping every few minutes to snap pictures. If you’re looking for bike rides in Spain that offer a perfect mix of nature and adventure, this is the one!

Ruta Fluvial del Turia (Valencia)

Difficulty: Moderate
Distance: 54 km
Area: Valencia

For a slightly more challenging ride, the Ruta Fluvial del Turia in Valencia is a fantastic option. This 54 km route starts in the Jardín del Turia, which winds through the heart of the city before continuing into the surrounding countryside. As you cycle, you’ll pass by parks, orchards, and rural landscapes – the perfect mix of urban and natural beauty in one ride.

It’s a moderate difficulty, so while you’ll get a decent workout, you won’t be completely exhausted at the end. Plus, it’s a great way to see the side of Valencia that most visitors miss. Don’t forget to stop by the famous Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias as you pedal through the city.

Vía Verde del Plazaola (Navarra and País Vasco)

Difficulty: Moderate
Distance: 54 km
Area: Navarra and Gipuzkoa

Another classic green route is the Vía Verde del Plazaola, which connects the provinces of Navarra and Gipuzkoa. This 54 km route follows an old railway track, taking you through stunning mountain landscapes, picturesque villages, and the dense forests that the northern regions of Spain are known for. The Vía Verde del Plazaola in its fullest extent is around 77 km in total, running between Pamplona (Navarra) and Andoain (Gipuzkoa). However, the most commonly cycled and maintained section of the route is 54 km long.

While it’s moderate in difficulty, it’s incredibly rewarding. You’ll ride through tunnels, across viaducts, and pass by some seriously charming towns that make you feel like you’re cycling through history. If you want a ride that gives you the feeling of escaping into nature while still offering a bit of a challenge, this one is calling your name.

El Carrilet (Girona)

Difficulty: Moderate
Distance: 57 km
Area: Girona

Last but definitely not least is El Carrilet, which runs between the town of Olot and the town of Sant Feliu de Guíxols in Cataluña. This is one of the best bike rides in Spain if you’re into diverse landscapes. You’ll cycle through volcanic regions (yes, volcanic!), pass by lakes, forests, and even a few historic sites along the way.

The 57 km route is perfect for those who like a moderate ride with plenty of variety. It’s well-marked, making it easy to follow, and you’ll be rewarded with some pretty epic views as you pedal your way to the finish line.
