Discover our monthly mini-guide for your weekend away in Tenerife

Even if it doesn’t seem possible, you can see the highlights of Tenerife in a long weekend if you plan smart. Spend a day in the north visiting towns like La Orotava and Garachico, discover their historic streets and gardens, then head south for beaches, water sports, and a whale and dolphin-watching tour from Los Cristianos. If you have time, fit in a quick trip to Mount Teide or a walk among the volcanic landscapes. In this guide, we’ll show you the sights and experiences you shouldn’t miss during your weekend away in Tenerife. Let’s go!

The classic go to: Whale and dolphin-watching boat trip from Los Cristianos

If you’re in Tenerife, doing a whale and dolphin-watching boat trip from Los Cristianos is something you’ve got to try. The waters off that coast are deep enough that you often see pilot whales and dolphins pretty close to shore. You’ll head out on a boat or catamaran, and there’s usually a guide who explains what species you might see and why it’s so important to treat the ocean with care. It’s one of the most magical ways to connect with nature in Tenerife. The tours are very accessible even if you’ve never done anything like this before, and you often get to see real wildlife. Most of the companies running these trips are responsible and eco-conscious, making it a fun and sustainable experience.

You can pick a 2 or 3‑hour tour, and many of them let you swim or snorkel if conditions are good. It’s not just a tourist ride: you learn something, have fun, and maybe make some amazing memories seeing marine life up close. Here are some companies you can check out:

The can’t miss spot: La Orotava

La Orotava is one of those places in Tenerife you absolutely have to see. It’s a beautiful town with cobblestone streets and old houses with wooden balconies. It also has gardens and patios full of flowers, perfect for just hanging out. It’s famous for the flower carpets during Corpus Christi, which are incredible. And the best part? It’s in a valley with stunning views of the Teide, which we will talk about in a second. La Orotava is a must-visit for your weekend away in Tenerife.

The foodie haven: Papas Arrugadas con Mojo

Papas arrugadas con mojo are one of the most typical dishes of the Canary Islands and an absolute must-try if you visit Tenerife. Small potatoes are cooked in plenty of salt until their skins wrinkle, and they’re served with mojo, which can be red (spicy, made with peppers and garlic) or green (made with cilantro or parsley and garlic). It’s a simple dish, but full of flavor, and goes perfectly with fish, meat, or even on its own as a snack. So, where should you try these if you’re spending a weekend away in Tenerife? Here are three spots we think you might enjoy:

Rincón de Pedro

This cozy, family-run restaurant serves hearty, home-style dishes made with care. Its central location in Santa Cruz makes it a perfect spot to take a break while exploring the city. Don’t miss their papas. They’re definitely a must-try!

Guachinche Ramón

A traditional guachinche in La Orotava (Tenerife Norte), Guachinche Ramón feels completely authentic. It’s set in a family garage turned dining room, surrounded by vineyards, and their homemade wine is a big part of the experience.

La pimienta

Situated in La Matanza de Acentejo, La Pimienta specializes in fresh, local seafood. The atmosphere is genuine and unpretentious, making it a great spot to enjoy authentic Canarian flavors away from the usual tourist spots.

The walker’s dream: Parque Nacional del Teide

Teide National Park is one of the most amazing spots in Tenerife and definitely a must-see. Located in the center of the island, it is home to Mount Teide, the highest peak in Spain at 3,718 meters and the third tallest volcano in the world if measured from its base under the ocean.

The landscape is unlike anywhere else with lava fields, craters, and rock formations that look almost otherworldly. It is perfect for hiking, whether you want a short walk, a more challenging climb to the crater with a special permit, or a ride on the cable car almost to the summit to enjoy incredible panoramic views.

The park is also great for photography, stargazing, and seeing unique plants and animals that thrive in this volcanic environment. If you are visiting Tenerife, it should not be missed as it offers unforgettable scenery and a true sense of adventure.
