Here are some of our highlights!
August is always one of the most popular months for Spaniards to travel, myself included. According to a recent ObservaTur study, around 33% of Spaniards go on holiday in July and 35% in August. So, what makes August such a popular time to travel? Let’s check out the highlights!
Las Fiestas
Yep, August in Spain is also packed with some of the most famous and popular festivals in the country. I bet you’ve seen some of these on your local news, like La Tomatina or the Feria de Málaga. Let’s take a closer look at each one!
La Tomatina, Buñol (August 27)
La Tomatina is a festival that is celebrated every August in Buñol, a town in Valencia, where thousands of people gather to throw tomatoes at each other in a giant and fun battle. It all starts with music, a good atmosphere and the famous Palo Jabón, a slippery pole that must be climbed to start the event. When the cannon fire sounds, the tomato war begins, and for an hour, everyone throws ripe tomatoes at each other. I’ve never been but it seems fun!

Semana Grande, Bilbao (August 16-24) and San Sebastián (August 9-16)
La Semana Grande is the most important festival in both Bilbao and San Sebastián, and is expected with a lot of emotion. In Bilbao, it begins with the launch of the txupinazo and the appearance of Marijaia, the symbol of the festival, followed by nine days of concerts, fireworks, food contests, Basque sports and much more. In San Sebastián, although the style is a little more elegant, it is also enjoyed in a big way, with fireworks shows on La Playa de la Concha, fairs, music, and activities for all ages.
Fiestas de Gràcia, Barcelona (August 15-21)
Las Fiestas de Gràcia are one of those celebrations that make you feel at home even if you are not from the neighborhood. Every August, people from the barrio decorate the streets with creative themes. These fiestas are full of music, food, and social gatherings.
Relaxing and stunning beaches (but here are our three favorites)
According to Condé Nast Traveler Spain, the three most voted and visited beaches in August 2024 are:
- Zarauz (País Vasco). It was chosen as the best beach in Spain in 2024 for its width, waves to surf and vibrant life, specially on the paseo marítimo.
- Famara (Lanzarote). It is a volcanic and wild beach, highly appreciated by surfers and nature, which took second place in the ranking.
- Cala Saona (Formentera, Islas Baleares). This beach became famous for its turquoise waters and white sand.
Not just because I’m Spanish, but honestly, it’s hard to find a beach in Spain that isn’t amazing…
Music festivals
As we do every month, let’s go through the monthly music festivals during August in Spain!

Sonorama Ribera, Aranda de Duero (August 6-10)

Tickets start at around €90 for general admission, with VIP options and camping available nearby.
